Hi, My name is Katy Muench. I'm 25 years old and I am an English teaching assistant at School Number 9. I came to Poland on the Leonardo Programme. I like travelling, animals, reading and shopping.
I come from Birmingham, which is the second biggest city in the UK. More than 1 million people live there. It's in the West Midlands region and is about two hours away from London.
Birmingham is famous for the Bull Ring, Aston Villa Football Club, baltis (a type of curry), its many canals (more than Venice!). It's a very diverse city and people living there come from all over the world. I enjoy the multicultural aspect of the city and like to meet people from different countries and try international food.
It has a lot of culture and entertainment, with many theatres, concert venues, markets, art galleries and a varied nightlife.
People from Birmingham are known as 'Brummies' but as I was born in another city, Brighton, I consider myself an honorary Brummie.
In recent years, many Polish people have come to live in Birmingham, and there are many Polish shops selling traditional food and newspapers.
My favourite things about Poland are Wroclaw, zupa, cukiernas, fruit (the apples here are enormous), the birds, the mountains, and some of the very nice people I have met. I'm looking forward to the start of Spring and Summer though, it's been very cold for me here!
I'm enjoying meeting the children at School number 9 and hope that I can help them with the English language.


My name is Matthew Preston.
I am 24 years old. I am an English assistant in Wałbrzych. I work at School Number 9. I came to Poland on the Leonardo Programme from Wolverhampton, England. My hobbies are reading, writing and football.
Wolverhampton is located in the west of a place called the Midlands. This is the heart of England and is in the centre of the country. I went to university at the University of Wolverhampton and I studied Law and Sociology.

Wolverhampton is famous for its football team “Wolverhampton Wanderers” also known as “Wolves”. They were very successful in the 1950s when they played big European teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona. The team is now in the Championship, this is one league below the English Premiership. We also have a Polish player called Tomasz Frankowski. He is more famous in England for playing 17 games and scoring 0 goals for Wolves than he is for his many goals for Poland and Wisła Kraków.
Wolverhampton, like Wałbrzych was a former industrial city, as was the Midlands itself. The West Midlands used to be the heart of Industry in England, in the past. It made locks, bolts, nails and pipes as well as many very important components that were sold all around the world. The smoke created by all the factories, was black in colour . This led to the area being called “The Black Country”. The name has stayed even today and many people throughout the area, still call themselves “Black Country Folk”. The West Midlands also has its own special language, called the “Black Country dialect”.
In places like Birmingham, Wolverhampton and nearby Dudley and Bilston, particularly this can clearly be heard in everyday language. It is the closest to Olde English spoken in England today and has a lot in common with the German language.
When I return to England at the end of January, I will take back with me a great affection for Poland and its people. I will particularly cherish the kindness and enthusiasm shown to me be staff and children alike at School Number 9. This has encouraged me, more than ever to continue my teacher training in England and the learning of the Polish language, which I have started in Poland. The bonds of friendship forged between us will last a lifetime and I hope this will encourage more people to visit Poland and experience its wonderful culture, beauty and people.
I have a truly remarkable experience , which I will never forget.


Nazywam się Matthew Preston. Mam 24 lata. Jestem asystentem języka angielskiego w Gimnazjum nr 9. Przyjechałem do Polski z Wolverhampton w Anglii w ramach programu „Leonardo da Vinci”. Interesuję się piłką nożną, pisaniem i książkami.

Wolverhampton leży w zachodniej części krainy nazywanej Midlands (jednego z dziewięciu regionów w Anglii), która jest sercem Anglii, leży w centrum kraju. Studiowałem prawo i socjologię na Uniwersytecie w Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton słynie ze swojej drużyny piłkarskiej Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, znanej także jako „Wolves” (Wilki). Najlepsze lata drużyny przypadają na latach 50-te dwudziestego wieku, kiedy Wilki grały z wielkimi drużynami europejskimi takimi jak Real Madryd czy FC Barcelona. Aktualnie zespół gra w Championship, ligę niżej niż English Premiership. Gra u nas także Polak, Tomasz Frankowski. W Anglii jest bardziej sławny z powodu tego, że zagrał w 17 meczach i nie zdobył żadnego gola dla „Wilków”, niż z powodu wielu goli strzelonych dla Wisły Kraków czy reprezentacji Polski.

Wolverhampton, tak jak Wałbrzych, było miastem przemysłowym, identycznie z resztą jak całe Midlands. Dawniej West Midlands było przemysłową stolicą Anglii. Produkowano tu zamki, śruby, gwoździe i rury, a także wiele ważnych komponentów, które eksportowano na cały świat. Ponieważ dym emitowany przez zakłady był czarnego koloru, cały ten teren nazywany był „Czarnym Krajem”. Ta nazwa zachowała się do dziś i wielu ludzi z tego regionu nazywa siebie „Ludem Czarnego Kraju”.

West Midlands ma także swój własny, wyjątkowy język nazywany „dialektem Czarnego Kraju”. Można go usłyszeć na co dzień szczególnie w miejscach takich jak Birmingham, Wolverhampton i pobliskim Dudley czy Bilston. Jest on najbliższy używanemu dziś w Anglii Olde English i ma wiele wspólnego z językiem niemieckim.

Kiedy wrócę do Anglii w końcu stycznia, zabiorę ze sobą wielką sympatię do Polski i Polaków. Szczególnie miło będę wspominał uprzejmość personelu i uczniów Gimnazjum nr 9. Zachęciło mnie to, bardziej niż kiedykolwiek, do kontynuowania studiów przygotowujących do pracy w zawodzie nauczyciela oraz nauki języka polskiego, którą tutaj zacząłem.

Więzi przyjaźni zawiązane między nami przetrwają całe życie i mam nadzieję, że to zachęci więcej osób do przyjeżdżania do Polski i doświadczenia jej wspaniałej kultury, piękna i poznania wielu wspaniałych ludzi.
Zdobyłem naprawdę znakomite doświadczenia, których nigdy nie zapomnę.

 W pierwszym semestrze roku szkolnego 2006/2007 gościliśmy w naszej szkole asystentkę języka angielskiego z miasta partnerskiego Wolverhampton w Wielkiej Brytanii - Panią Jonquil Marchant.
Przez pół roku wszyscy gimnazjaliści mieli okazję uczyć się języka angielskiego podczas lekcji w obecności naszego gościa. Jonquil brała udział w zajęciach o różnym charakterze. Nauczyciele starali się tak je przygotować, by spotkanie z rodowitą Angielką było przede wszystkim okazją do konwersacji. Dowiedzieliśmy się bardzo dużo na temat życia Brytyjczyków, ciekawych miejsc w Wielkiej Brytanii, świąt, zwyczajów, tradycyjnych potraw itd. Na pewno takie rozmowy pozwoliły nam też przyzwyczaić ucho do niełatwego brytyjskiego akcentu i nabrać śmiałości w wypowiadaniu się w języku obcym. I trzeba przyznać, że całkiem nieźle nam szło !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Na pożegnanie klasa I a przygotowała scenkę ilustrującą przykładową lekcję z udziałem naszej asystentki, a młodzież z II a zaprezentowała wymyślony przez siebie quiz sprawdzający wiedzę gościa na temat naszego kraju i tutejszych zwyczajów po pół roku pobytu w Polsce. Wynik był imponujący!!!! A nagrodą - oczywiście złoty medal, który wykuli sami uczniowie klasy II a. Imprezę uświetnił występ naszego zespołu wokalno-instrumentalnego.
Żal było się rozstawać! Kto wie, może i w tym roku dopisze nam szczęście i znów będziemy gościli w progach naszego gimnazjum przybysza z Wolverhampton?
